Frequently Asked Questions 1. What does the last 25% of the season mean? Is the Regional meet counted as a meet in determining the last 25%?
No, the regional meet is not counted when calculating the “last 25% of the season”. For example, if a team runs 8 meets throughout the regular season not counting regionals the committee will look at the team's final 2 meets and also the regional meet. (in accordance with the listed criteria) Or if a team had 6 regular season meets we would round up from 1.5 and look at their last 2 meets along with the regionals. 2. Should I be looking at traveling and trying to compete against other regions late in the season?
No, that is not necessary and ultimately would be an institutional decision. Also in looking at the history of competition there are currently multiple overlaps in regions to draw quality comparisons if necessary. 3. Our conference runs on a 5K course rather than a 6K course. Will this penalize us?
No, the committee does not look as times or length of courses, rather they will look at and evaluate the actual head to head results against the opponents in the meet, i.e. team place and team scoring. 4. Which criteria will the committee look at with the most weight?
The criteria is not listed in preferential order and each listed item is just one piece of the selection process and the committee will look at all pieces of the listed criteria when comparing teams for selections. 5. What happens when I only run my B team at a meet in the last 25% of the season?
The committee will take that into account when coaches fill out their "team information form" to see the student-athletes that actually ran for each team. The meet will still be looked at within the criteria, but the student-athletes that actually competed will also be considered. 6. After regionals do I need to contact anyone on the committee or send any information in?
Coaches need to submit their “team information form” to the NCAA by Sunday, November 5th. National committee members will gather all regional results and the final championships fields will be posted online by 3 p.m. The championships entry period will be 3-9 p.m. on Sunday, November 12th. 7. After regionals when can I book my team's travel?
Coaches of teams that place in the top 2 at each regional site automatically qualify to the championships and may contact Short's Travel at that time to book their flights or arrange their ground transportation. The rest of the championships fields will be posted by 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 12th on www.ncaasports.com and the championships meet website. The fields listing all qualified teams and individuals will be posted and after that time teams may then confirm and arrange their transportation to the championships. 8. How do regional rankings conducted by the coaches association and other outside polls impact selections?
Any regional rankings or polls produced by the coaches association or by any other outside group are NOT a factor in the selections to the cross country national championships and that information will not be used in any form during the selection process. No other NCAA sport allows the use of outside polls in their selection criteria. The committee will only look at the criteria and factors that has been printed in the handbook and published to the membership. 9. How are the regional reps from the coaches association involved in the selection process?
Regional reps from the coaches association are not involved in the selection process and will not be part of the selection call. The national committee (8 members, 1 representing each region) will be on the selection call and will take part in selections. Outside reps can be utilized as resources to help gather information on late season performance prior to selections, but the national committee members will be the only individuals on the selection call. |
